View Full Version : Mini MB Build

12-14-2009, 11:54 AM
As if I don't already have enough work on my winter to-do list.
The Mini Jeep body is ready for pick up. So, the build thread must begin.

This will be a project for the grandson. I know, he's only 6 months old right now. But I get to Drive it and tweak the suspension till he's big enough to drive.:roflmao:

I'll be heading up to D & L Bensingers this Friday to pick up the mini.
For any of the MB or old CJ enthusiasts, I hear he's got quite the collection of old military Jeeps and parts there. Anyone want to ride shotgun? Plan is to leave my house around 0800.

Link to his "mini" page: https://www.dlbensinger.com/bemakmini.php

Build list will be coming soon.

I'd go but i have to set up the office party on Friday.....If'n you can remember, i saw he has universal gerry can spouts. If it looks like something you would use for our standard 5 gallon metal gas cans, can you pick me up 1 or 2? They're like $26.00 or somethin, will give you cash ahead of time or after.....yer call....

thanks for the heads up, one way or the other....

What time do you plan to be back?

12-14-2009, 12:37 PM
I heard a mini Jeep will make your A$$ look BIG!!

My A$$ makes my A$$ look big. But this thing will make it look HUGE!

What time do you plan to be back?
If everything goes as planned? 5 pm'ish

If everything goes as planned? 4 pm'ish

That's pushing it a little too late for me, or I'd have enjoyed going. I gotta pick Stephanie up at the airport that afternoon :) Can't miss that! :pirate1:

12-18-2009, 10:33 AM
My trip up to PA got cut short. Started having problems with the truck last week. Occasionally it was stuttering on acceleration.
On the way up today it started getting worse to the point the engine went into some kind of safety loop and the transmission would not go into overdrive. Limped back to Prince Frederick Dodge, where it sits now.
Crank and cam position sensors are bad, and the plugs need replaced.

There goes my Mini MB build $$.:bawl:

12-18-2009, 11:19 AM
Thanks Mark.
I called them and said I'd come back up for the Mini MB after Christmas. No hurry anyway.
Bryan's off work today, so he should be able to take me back up to pick up the truck when it's finished.

12-21-2009, 06:00 AM
Gunny, if'n the little jeep body will fit in my F150 box, I'll run up with ya....or even if we need to put the car hauler on....roads should be pretty clear by now....

Juss holler......

12-21-2009, 06:27 AM
Thanks Tank, but my truck is fixed. May contact them and find out their hours this week. If they will be around Wed or Thurs, I my try and go back up.
Dying to get my hands on this thing so I can start planning the frame.

12-22-2009, 02:34 PM
All right, I'm going to try this again.
Heading back up tomorrow to pick it up.
Wish me luck.

12-22-2009, 03:14 PM
break a leg.

12-23-2009, 06:28 AM
break a leg.

Not a truck...:gag:

12-23-2009, 08:41 PM
Got it. Made it up and back without issues, other than my gout acting up.
Will pull it from the crate tomorrow and get some pictures to post.

12-24-2009, 08:16 AM
Heading over to Marks to unwrap, photo, and measure the body today. Also working on Marks beast.

Neat pictures... looks like fun! :)

12-27-2009, 08:16 AM
Spent some time at Marks yesterday and got the Mini's body measured up for a frame. Still need to disassemble the tractor to see if the frame plan will mate up with the drive train.

Also got some work done on the beast. Motor is painted and ready for reassembly.

No work today. Grilling a ham and celebrating Christmas with the kids today.

12-27-2009, 08:40 AM
Hey man, the mini MB sounds like fun. I'm half tempted to see what the neighbor wants for his full size one here. I'll have to get you some pics.

Have fun on your second christmas today.

We're headed out hiking in searh of an ice fall. Got a little chilly snap here, it's 4 deg this morning.

12-29-2009, 08:43 AM
Here's a shot of the frame plan so far.
Box in the center represents the body's floor pan, the only part that sets below the top of the frame.
The motor fitment is going to be tight, as the drawing doesn't show the firewall.
Also, the drive pulley, (top pulley) is a little high and I'm not sure if it's adjustable yet. Belt is 1/4" from the floor pan.:eyes:
I'll may have to either tilt the motor back or lower it below the frame, depending on where the rear axle pulley falls and if the upper motor pulley is adjustable.
The lower pulley will most likely be removed, as it sits too low.

12-30-2009, 03:07 PM
Ordered my leaf springs Monday, and they're here.
How come I can't get other parts that fast. Still waiting on my link material from before Thanksgiving.
Plan on picking up the tubing for the frame tomorrow. (if open)
Drew up another frame plan that may work out a little better. Just have to see how things from the tractor work out.
Might take that apart this weekend too.

12-30-2009, 07:36 PM
hey bring the mower over
I'm in PA and should be home late on Friday night
so Sat and sunday I;ll be in the shop
If you come by please fill up those 2 cans with fuel and I'll pay you when I see you on Sat.

12-31-2009, 05:46 PM
Took the tractor over today and started to tear it apart.
Also picked up some steel, way more than I needed, but what the heck.
The frame will be built using 1" x 2", 1/8" wall tubing.
I'll be there most the day tomorrow if anyone want's to get out of the house.
Plan is to finish the tear down of the tractor, then finish design of the frame so it can be built.
Might even get around to starting the frame.

01-01-2010, 11:06 AM
The tractor's almost completely apart. Still have to remove the axle.
Will start cutting and laying out the frame this afternoon.

01-01-2010, 03:56 PM
Finished taking the axle out. This is the only part of the Tractor frame I will be using. It's the motor mount and the drive pulley tensioner.

Then started building the frame.

01-01-2010, 04:22 PM
You gonna patent the frame design? Could be worth a few $$ if someone was willing to match tub and frame production.... :compwork:

The hard part is gonna be prying you away fromit when it's time to give it to the boy! :roflmao::roflmao:

Looks great so far, good luck!

01-01-2010, 04:55 PM
Working on it anymore this weekend ?

01-01-2010, 05:17 PM
Thanks Tank. No patents. I've already stolen some ideas from others that have done this build, but this one will still be quite unique.

Ben, I'll be there most the day tomorrow.
Going to try and finish up the frame and bumpers.

Mark will also be working on his motor tomorrow.

01-01-2010, 06:21 PM
I'll stop over there tomorrow morning ... don't get too much done before I get there ... I wouldnt want to arrive when the last bolt is getting put in ... again ... :roflmao:

01-01-2010, 06:23 PM
Will do. I'll be there after 8:30.

01-02-2010, 04:00 PM
More of the frame done before starting on Marks buggy.
I really like how the rear bumper came out with the 1 1/4" receiver. Still trying to decide if I want to put clevis' in for some shackles.

01-03-2010, 09:01 AM
Awesome build! I think Alex might need one for next christmas. You gonna put a tire carrier on it?

01-03-2010, 04:04 PM
No tire carrier, but it could be done. Decided against the shackles for now too. Did leave enough room up front for a winch though.

More progress. The frame was finished up today, other than body mounts.

Then on to engine placement. Didn't fit where I originally planned it (above the frame) so I dropped the mount to below the frame and she fit's like a V-8 in a Sami!:roflmao:
I may have to clearance the body for the oil fill port. Still want to try turning the motor around seeing how it fits the other direction.

01-07-2010, 08:28 PM
Have to go renew the drivers license tomorrow morning, then I'll be back working on this.
Plan is to finish up the body mounts, engine plate, and start working on the spring locations all tomorrow.

01-07-2010, 09:23 PM
Have to go renew the drivers license tomorrow morning

switching to the senior citizen marked card eh? :(

01-08-2010, 08:59 AM
No restrictions,,,,,,, YET!
Heading over to Marks now to get some work done.

01-24-2010, 04:16 PM
A little more completed on the mini today, but no pictures.

Did some maintenance on the shop first- (rewiring faulty outlets, and rebuilding the 20 ton press).

Then worked on mounting the rear axle. The rear axle will have foe springs and be rigid mounted to the frame. Any spring movement or axle wrap and the belt may come off, so that made up my mind.
It's tacked into place until I can get the new drive pulley on the motor, make sure everything lines up then burn it in.

Next up is building the front axle. Anyone have a small manual rack and pinion steering set up for a dune buggy or VW?

02-12-2010, 04:24 PM
Anything going on this weekend?

02-12-2010, 06:06 PM
I'll be at Marks all weekend. Waiting on parts for the mini, but may start working on the rear hubs, exhaust, and control pedals.

02-12-2010, 09:50 PM
I'll stop by tomorrow around 10:00 ...

02-13-2010, 10:57 AM
Got the rear hubs figured out. We tacked them into place for fit testing, and man is this thing going to be big. Almost stock Jeep height. Pictures to follow.
Still no FedEx driver, so no front hub parts yet. Guess we'll work on the gas tank mount.

02-13-2010, 02:58 PM
As promised, here are the pictures ...

Looking Good.

02-13-2010, 04:44 PM
Thanks Sam.
Ben helped me build that Jerry can bracket today from scratch and I really like the way it turned out. The 5L Jerry can will serve as the fuel cell.
FedEx just showed up with my front hubs and spindles, so tomorrow I will be building the front axle and knuckles.

02-13-2010, 05:10 PM
Looking good Jim.

02-13-2010, 09:43 PM
I'll head over around the same time tomorrow Jim ...

02-15-2010, 11:02 AM
Yesterday I built the knuckles and today the front axle was completed.

The machine work is done and the cut made on the pulley for the motor
Left it on the refrigerator.

02-17-2010, 10:50 PM
Thanks, I'll be back over there Sunday.

02-27-2010, 02:52 PM
More progress. Bought some 1" thin wall tubing the other day and bent up some exhaust today.
http://img705.imageshack.us/img705/8287/img2892a.jpg (http://img705.imageshack.us/i/img2892a.jpg/)
Built a cool little muffler using a standard off the shelf lawn mower muffler, but capping the back side and continuing the pipe out the back of the mini.

Finally got some pictures uploaded to image shack. Uploaded pictures of the knuckles a few posts back too.

02-28-2010, 05:46 PM
Scrapping my steering idea for one of these.
http://www.dansperformanceparts.com/buggy/susp/11%20in%20rack.jpg (http://www.dansperformanceparts.com/buggy/susp/11%20in%20rack.jpg)
It's 11" long, 4" travel with 1.5 turn of the wheel lock to lock.

02-28-2010, 06:47 PM
wow great find. And less tha $100. cool

02-28-2010, 06:56 PM
Awesome build. I love the detail on all the small parts.

03-01-2010, 07:43 AM
Damn Jim, you been looking at landrover exhaust pictures, that looks a lot like the stock exhuaust routing on my 109. Looks about the same size pipe too.

03-30-2010, 05:58 PM
Just dropped some $ on parts for the mini. Steering is going to be super cool though.
Picked up some 1" stainless last week and will rebuild the exhaust coming out of the muffler. Needs to come back more, past the battery box, and exit below the rear bumper.
Also need to start thinking about paint. Time to research what color green I need.
Oh, and lexon for the windshield, a starter button, switches, lights, padding for the seat, canvas to cover it, etc. The list will never end.

04-12-2010, 05:56 AM
All the steering parts came in last Thursday, so I spent a few hours in the garage saturday rigging it up. SWEET! is all I can say.

Just may have to load it up in the back of the truck and bring it to the meeting this week.

04-13-2010, 05:02 PM
Better bring da shotgun and post a watch on t while yer eatin' !!

Can't wait to see it!

04-15-2010, 07:38 AM
Well last night after the event the Mini was in an Accident. I haven't saw the picture from the wreck yet but apprently there was a Truck, Trailer and Pallet of Concrete pavers involved.
No one was hurt.

From What I've heard I think it can be repaired easily enough.
More details as I find them out.

04-15-2010, 07:56 AM
Jeeps can be fixed, I hope no one got hurt.

04-15-2010, 08:07 AM
I'll get pictures of the accident tonight and post them up. May need a winch to pull it out.

04-15-2010, 08:09 AM
A little more detail has come in.

Apparently it happened during the unloading process from the back of Gunny's truck.

04-15-2010, 03:29 PM
That sucks!
I got a winch on a working Jeep if you need it!

04-15-2010, 04:48 PM
Recovered it when I got home. All's well!

04-16-2010, 06:44 AM

04-16-2010, 07:20 AM

Yea, i really hope that pictures were taken:shocked:

04-18-2010, 09:33 PM
To hell with the mini.....you ok Gunny?

04-19-2010, 06:41 AM
This whole thing's gotten blown out of proportion. Dion decided to make it out to be more that it was.
I was unloading the mini out of the back of the truck onto a pallet of patio pavers ( so the wife could use the truck the next day) and it rolled off the back of the pallet hitting my Jeep trailer. Scratched the bumper is all.

Spent the better part of Sunday working on it. Painted and installed the head lights. and built mounts for the parking lamps.
Scratch my head and some other body parts trying to figure out the clutch pedal and shifter. Ended up with some ideas. Time to put paper to metal and get it done.

04-20-2010, 06:53 PM
No sweat, juss figured you hang out with the TOOLMAN and maybe some of that prowess rubbed off. Glad to hear that you didn't get put too far back over it....hell, you could probably wheel it at Gore!

07-31-2010, 08:43 PM
Spent some quality time working on the Mini today.
With Dion's help, the Clutch, Brake, and Shifter are completed.
We even started it just to hear the thunder!

I just got the pictures posted on my shutterfly account:

Wish you guys would have called. I'd have come over and drank beer while you worked.:roflmao:

08-01-2010, 04:58 PM
Just ordered the drive belt, and will be picking up the last little pieces during the week.
Plan is to finish up all the fabrication this Friday, then take it for a test spin before stripping it down for paint.
I'll be there Saturday finishing things up or painting.

08-01-2010, 06:24 PM
looking good. Who is painting it? Spray Bomb?

08-02-2010, 06:18 AM
Yeah spray bomb. Bought a case of the military OD at half price. Way more than I needed but I've got plenty of touch up paint.

When do we start Madison's Mini?

08-02-2010, 09:31 PM
hmmhh have to think about that. Aint been greasy or on the working end of a grinder in a few months now HA HA

08-03-2010, 07:47 AM
Gunny, you can help me build mine. But I want it to look like this (http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showpost.php?p=10238473&postcount=15)

08-03-2010, 08:17 AM
All it takes is money! You know I'm game for building just about anything.

08-03-2010, 08:48 AM
Pretty sure those were samurai axles. :roflmao: they really dont look that big on the mini..

08-09-2010, 06:35 AM
Lots for work done on the mini this weekend. All the fabrication is done, engine fired up, and controls tested.

Note to self- "Lawn mower engine's don't run on Diesel".

Completely disassembled it yesterday afternoon and finished most of the welding. When I get back from Denver next week, I'll start painting and post plenty of pictures of the final assembly.

08-09-2010, 06:37 AM
Note to self- "Lawn mower engine's don't run on Diesel".

You need to explain this one?

How do you know?

08-09-2010, 09:18 AM
Grabbed a can of (what I thought was) gasoline at Mark's, to do a test run on the mini.
She fired right up on the gas that was in the carb bowl, but about 5 seconds later, when the Diesel mixed in? She no run so good!

Only took me about 2 hours to figure out what the problem was.:gonnablow:

Fresh gasoline, and she runs real good again.

But at least I got to clean the carb!

08-17-2010, 11:48 AM
Heading to Marks tonight to start sanding and painting the mini. Hope to have it all painted by this weekend, then reassemble Saturday or Sunday.
I plan on taking plenty of pictures and will hopefully post some up here when I have time.

Good luck and don't forget to weld up the steering bracket.

Oh and just ignore those crumpled fenders I accidently drove over last saturday.

08-20-2010, 10:27 AM
Thanks Dion, steering bracket welded.

It's all going GREEN! Lot's painted and will start assembling the frame today. Taking the camera back this afternoon to take pictures.

08-20-2010, 04:14 PM
Damn Firefox won't let me download pictures at the house.
Anyway, the frame is painted and back on all 4 wheels, engine is in, and exhaust is plumbed.
Started working on the body.

08-22-2010, 04:46 PM
Here's the long awaited pictures from Friday's work.

Didn't work on it Saturday, but spent all day there today and there's much more completed now. Just have to take more pictures.
The tub is now painted and bolted on, as well as the windshield. The Fenders and Grill are finished, but I need to tap a couple bolt holes before I can mount them.
To-Do list is getting smaller.:D

08-22-2010, 05:26 PM
Looks good. Are you going to be ready by Main Jambo?

08-23-2010, 08:19 AM
I love these first two pictures because they're deceiving. If you look at the tires compared to the size of the frame, they look like narrow 42" uncut swamper's.

08-29-2010, 05:11 PM
More pictures coming soon. Worked on it for a while Saturday and got it running. Even took it for a short spin around the driveway at Marks (Where's the video Ben?). Still have a few little details to work out, but should be ready by the next meeting.

08-30-2010, 06:43 AM
It Runs !!!!! (http://harrisonbb.shutterfly.com/pictures/206)

09-07-2010, 06:27 PM
Was planning on bringing the mini to the meeting tomorrow night but attempt 3 and 4 to seal the fuel tank fitting both failed.
So I then slapped some regular old red silicone rtv on there to see what that does.
If it holds tomorrow when I try it, I'll have a running Mini MB at the meeting.
If it doesn't hold, next is tapping a piece of plate and welding that to the tank.
Might still bring it even if not running.

09-07-2010, 08:02 PM
cool looking forward to seeing it.

I really need to update this thread.
The mini's been running for a while, but there's always little things to finish up.
Finished wiring up the head lights and built a seat cushion a few weeks ago. Still need to mount the cushion but it sure does make for a smoother ride.
If the weather's nice tomorrow, I'll pull it out of the shed for a photo shoot.

Yes a trailer is in the planning stages, but I've alway's got something to keep me busy.
Just finished Ben's Jeep, and after 4 long years, Marks buggy is just about ready for Ice Breakers.
On the horizon:
Frame stiffeners for Beer30
Toyota engine swap for the son-in-laws new trail toy.
Full tube chassis for Dion's buggy.
Rear suspension work on Mark's Dewalt Leaf Blower.
Distant future is a roll cage for Patrick Kelly and my CJ-2A build.

man that turned out so sweet! I have been holding off on getting my little girl a power wheels because i wanted to find something that i could make that would be more useful and i think i found it. Now i just got to talk the wife into letting me spend 950 on the tub. Maybe i missed it but what size are the tires i was wondering because i might have some other sources for running gear and was wondering how the tires will effect speed.

I'll have to get back to you about tire size. I got a really great deal from one of our Dan's in the club for the tires and wheels. Saved me hundreds.

Don't know if it's posted earlier in the thread, but here is my Shutterfly photo album for the build. It's still being updatd though.

I wouldn't want to embarrass some jeep owners who have less articulation.

I wonder about Bill and Tank's fascination with me wearing a kilt. :eyes:
